INFORMATION BRIEF

Education is free to all Gambian children between the ages of 7 & 13 (primary) but in practice many of them never have a chance to go to school because the parent cannot afford uniforms and basic school items. The children we select will usually have lost a parent or have no parents at work and so we may need to offer other help.  Nursery education is not subsidised by the government at all.

Primary and Nursery school children may need:-

·               School uniforms (may need two sets due to rapid growth)

·               Stationery

·               Money for a meal at lunchtime

Nursery education is for 3-7 year olds.  Primary education begins at the age of 7 for most pupils and continues for six years until the age of 12-13. Those who reach a satisfactory standard in exams can go on to Middle School.

Middle School children may need:-

·               School uniforms (may need two sets due to rapid growth)

·               Books-although some are provided

·               Stationery

·               Payment towards school fees

Those who reach a satisfactory standard of education at the end of Middle School education will then go on to Senior Secondary School, age 16-17 which is more expensive since all books and examination fees have to be paid for.
